Twin Cities concrete goes through dozens of freeze and thaw cycles every winter. Water works into the surface, freezes, expands, and lifts the slab apart from the inside. Air-entrained mixes and proper jointing are what keep a driveway from spalling after two seasons.
Minnesota frost reaches roughly 42 to 48 inches in the metro. Footings and stoops set above that line move every year. Anything structural has to be founded below frost or built to float, or it will heave and crack no matter how good the pour was.
Much of the east metro sits on clay that holds water and swells. A slab is only as good as what is under it, so we prep and compact a proper aggregate base and address drainage before any concrete arrives on site.
Reliable placement runs roughly April through October, when temperatures hold above 40°F long enough for concrete to gain strength. Fall bookings usually have better availability. Winter work is possible with blankets and heat, but it needs planning.
De-icing salt is hard on young concrete. New flatwork should get through its first winter without heavy salt, and sealing helps considerably. We will tell you when a slab is ready rather than leaving you to guess.
